Small Business Optimism is High But Qualified Job Candidates are Hard to Find

Date: March 20, 2019

Tell NFIB what type of training workers need

NFIB’s Small Business Economic Trends survey continues to show small business optimism to be high, and many small businesses plan to expand in the coming months.

Job creation among small businesses broke a 45-year record in February, with the net addition of 0.52 workers per firm.

However, 47% of small businesses with open positions report few or no qualified applicants for the positions they were trying to fill, and 22% of owners cite the difficulty of finding qualified workers as their single most important business problem.

Thirty-seven percent of all owners reported job openings they simply could not fill, with the most open positions reported in the transportation, construction, and manufacturing sectors.

The lack of qualified workers is impacting the ability of many small businesses to grow. For this reason, NFIB is watching proposed solutions to workforce issues with great interest.

NFIB would like small businesses to tell us exactly what type of workforce solutions would be most helpful. Click here to take our survey on workforce development needs in Pennsylvania. We’ll deliver your answers to the General Assembly to help them find solutions that work for small business.
