NFIB Opposes Ballot Question 1

Date: October 29, 2018

Learn why NFIB is part of the Stop the Scam coalition

NFIB in Maine is a member of the Stop the Scam coalition which is working to educate voters about the harmful impact Question 1 will have on small businesses and working families. The ballot issue would provide free home care services to seniors, without eligibility requirements.

If this referendum passes it will increase taxes by $310 million. It will impose a 3.8% payroll tax on all workers who earn $128,400; 1.9% paid by the worker and 1.9%paid by the employer. Self-employed or passthrough entities would pay the total 3.8%. Just like the 3% tax surcharge on the 2016 ballot, this will drive high-earning professionals out of Maine.
