Every ten years, after the U.S. Census is completed, states are responsible for legislative redistricting based on population shifts. In New York State, the Independent Redistricting Commission is charged with drawing the lines for new legislative districts.
As part of the redistricting process, the Independent Redistricting Commission is responsible for holding public hearings and accepting public comments on the drafting of proposed district lines. All New Yorkers are encouraged to participate in virtual public meetings or submit public comment for consideration. Making your voice heard during the redistricting process helps ensure neighborhoods, communities, and all citizens are represented fairly.
