SMALL BUSINESS REACTION TO BRANSTAD’S FINAL ADDRESS

DES MOINES (January 10, 2017): In response to Governor Branstad’s Condition of the State today, the following statement may be attributed to the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Regional Director of State Public Policy, Tim Goodrich:

We applaud the Governor for presenting the legislature with a balanced budget. Borrowing from the future to pay for the present is never an option when you are running a small business on Main Street and it should never be an option for lawmakers. The small business community thrives on a stable state economy and by ensuring our employers that our fiscal house in order, it will embolden existing businesses to grow while simultaneously encouraging new entrepreneurs to begin their start-ups.

Small business owners throughout the state of Iowa have been doing more with less since the great recession and it is time for government agencies to do the same. A state that is leaner and more efficient will reduce the budget deficit and streamline what is often a complex and burdensome bureaucracy.

It will be incumbent upon lawmakers to support today’s economic proposals and we have every confidence that legislators on both sides of the aisle will do the hard work necessary to perpetuate the sound economic environment required to ensure a future that includes a strong and prosperous Iowan workforce and small business community.
