Small Business Calls for 2 Percent Cap on Annual Property Tax

Date: January 16, 2019

With New York’s 2019 legislative session in full swing, pro-business organizations are pushing for a permanent extension of the state’s cap on property tax increases in the new legislative session, reports NY State of Politics.

Ahead of the legislative session, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a list of 20 priorities he and his team will focus on during the current session—the cap on property tax increases falls within the priorities Gov. Cuomo announced in December 2018.

The proposed extension calls for making the 2 percent cap on annual property tax increases permanent. NFIB’s New York State Director Greg Biryla shared NFIB’s support of the tax provision.

“Independent business owners risk it all to bet on themselves and create opportunity in every community across New York,” said Biryla. “Unfortunately, Albany often stacks the deck against Main Street job creators by regulating too much, taxing too often, and reforming too little.”

Healthcare and infrastructure were also among the priorities Gov. Cuomo shared, with the latter including plans to invest $150 billion in infrastructure and creating 500,000 labor jobs throughout New York.
