Proposed Solar Energy Surcharge Dropped

Date: July 30, 2019

The surcharge would have penalized small business owners using solar energy.

We Energies has dropped a proposal to charge small business owners and homeowners with solar panel systems a monthly $3.53 a surcharge for each kilowatt of electricity generated.

Similar charges have been proposed by power companies in Michigan and Iowas but the fees on customers with solar panels have been rejected.

Other power companies nationally have sought similar charges. In Michigan and Iowa, regulators have recently rejected the fees on customers with solar panels.

Before reaching a settlement, We Energies argues that the surcharge would ensure that customers pay “their share of utilities’ fixed costs to deliver electricity,” reports the Journal Sentinel.
