The good news keeps on coming for Indiana’s small business owners.
On March 13, news broke that the state’s unemployment rate hovered at 4.0 percent for the month of January, its lowest since 2001. The U.S. average was 4.8 percent.
Of interest to small business owners, Indiana DWD reported that private sector employment grew by 31,000 in 2016.
“While Indiana’s unemployment rate is a positive indicator for the state’s workforce, it also represents a significant challenge for Hoosier employers in identifying and hiring qualified employees,” said Steven J. Braun, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD). “To this end, DWD is engaging Hoosier employers to inform our state’s workforce training and education efforts so that programs and courses are aligned with employer demand and producing pipelines of skilled employees.”
The state leads the Midwest with the lowest unemployment rate. Kentucky and Ohio trailed Indiana with 5 percent unemployment rates, respectively. Illinois lead the region with a 5.7 percent unemployment rate.
