Florida Legislature Passes Healthcare Transparency Bill

Date: March 14, 2016 Last Edit: March 16, 2016

HB 1175 now heads to the governor, who is expected to sign the bill.

In a win for Florida small business owners and consumers, legislation that would require hospitals to post pricing information passed the Legislature, and now awaits Gov. Rick Scott’s signature.

“While there is still more work to be done to empower patients at hospitals, this bill will help provide Floridians with information to make informed decisions about their healthcare and its costs,” Scott said. “I look forward to working with the Legislature to further empower patients and continue increasing price transparency at Florida hospitals.”

On the final day of session, the Florida Senate passed the bill, HB 1175, 34-1.

Once signed into law, the bill requires Florida’s state health agency to create a website that allows consumers to sift through various information, from price to the quality of healthcare, similar to HealthCare.Gov
