NFIB Calls on Legislative Leaders and Governor to Keep Wisconsin Businesses Open

Date: May 15, 2020

Supreme Court Decision a Step in Right Direction, However, More Needs to be Done to Help Small Business.

NFIB, the state’s leading small business organization, calls the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s ruling a step in the right direction. The ruling overturns the Governor’s stay-at-home order. However, there’s already concern from Wisconsin small business owners as counties have begun issuing their own stay-at-home orders through May 26th.

“Given the decision by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, NFIB is calling on both the state legislature and the Governor to work together to ensure that Wisconsin small businesses will not have to shut their doors once again. A survey out this week found that 73% of Wisconsin small business owners want the stay-at-home restrictions to be lifted immediately. Many have been shut down for weeks and their businesses are hanging on by a thread. They need to open back up to survive this crisis,” said NFIB State Director in Wisconsin, Bill G. Smith.

Earlier this week, a survey found that Wisconsin small business owners overwhelmingly agree – now is the time to reopen the state’s economy. According to a recent survey of NFIB Wisconsin small business owners, 73% say the non-essential business and stay-at-home restrictions should be lifted immediately. As for the government lifting restrictions in Wisconsin too early, 64% of Wisconsin small business owners are not concerned at all. A full 87% of Wisconsin small business owners think Wisconsin’s non-essential business closure is too restrictive and 78% of Wisconsin small business owners believe the state’s stay-at-home order is too restrictive. As for getting Wisconsin’s economy back up and running to levels pre-coronavirus crisis, only 25% of Wisconsin small business owners felt like that would happen in 2020, while more than half, 65% of small business owners in Wisconsin felt like that wouldn’t happen until next year at the earliest.
