OLYMPIA, Wash., April 2, 2020—From Patrick Connor, Washington state director for NFIB, on the release of its poll showing 92 percent of small-business owners negatively affected by the coronavirus and about half of small employers saying they can survive for no more than two months, and about one-third believing they can remain operational for 3-6 months.

“The new federal paid sick leave and extended paid family and medical leave programs do not replace Washington state’s paid sick-and-safe leave or paid family and medical leave mandates. Small-business owners are clearly suffering as a result of coronavirus-related closures and drastic decreases in sales. A mistake in applying state and federal leave laws could push a teetering business over the edge. We urge small-business owners to educate themselves about these overlapping obligations to ensure they are fully compliant with both federal and state law.”
