Rep. Walorski Pledges Liability Protection in Next Coronavirus Recovery Relief Bill
As part of NFIB’s Virtual Fly-In, Rep. Jackie Walorski said the COVID-19 pandemic has brought a lot of challenges – and even opportunities for small business.
Rep. Walorski says in her district, Indiana District 2, the economy is zooming back. Walorski says that a lot of her colleagues in D.C. are jealous of her district and the entire state of Indiana. RV and trailer distributors and retailers are seeing record sales. “Who would have thought that after months on the internet and being stuck at home people would want to go on vacation in an RV? D.C. is taking notice and we’re in an economic situation that everyone wants to be in,” said Walorski.
Rep. Walorksi added that when it comes to the next round of stimulus funding, Pelosi has been an obstacle, especially when you talk about liability protection. The Congresswoman told NFIB members that it should be the 4th bill and she is fighting to make sure it is. “Trial lawyers are already running commercials in California going after small business owners. Small business owners who are doing the right thing and protecting their employees need protection themselves and I am fighting to get that passed.” Walorski also added that she is also advocating for another round of PPP for the small business owners who are still in deep trouble.
Another aspect of the fourth round of stimulus funding that is still being hashed out is the $600/week federal unemployment benefits that recently expired. The President recently cut that weekly benefit down to $300/week with the option for states to add another $100/week. Rep. Walorski said that small business owners have made it clear that they are unanimously opposed to even that much unemployment money and want it to stop now. However, Rep. Walorski added that here is no magic number now, rather that there is going to be some negotiation and compromise in D.C. as we move forward in September. The Congresswoman told NIFB members that she is committed to cutting it out and using the money somewhere else. “Why don’t we thank the essential workers who have never left their jobs? I support a pay roll tax credit to thank those workers for working through this pandemic.”
As for the Corporate Transparency Act, Rep. Walorksi says she is working with the Senate to get it out of the Senate bill, calling it one of a lot of bad pieces of legislation in D.C. right now.
