NFIB Applauds Governor for Focus on the Importance of Business Success in Connecticut
State’s small business create half the jobs, and their success is critical

HARTFORD, Feb. 1, 2019 – NFIB, an association representing thousands of Connecticut small and independent businesses, is grateful to Gov. Ned Lamont for announcing an economic development plan today that includes supporting existing and new businesses in the state.

“There are over 340 thousand small businesses currently operating in Connecticut, and their success is a critical part of the economy, especially when they currently employ half of the state’s working people,” said Andrew Markowski, state director of NFIB. “It is refreshing to see Gov. Ned Lamont bring in experienced business people and seek their advice and assistance to support, promote, and advocate on behalf of existing businesses.”

“Creating a partnership to attract new companies to Connecticut is admirable,” added Markowski. “We hope that support of the companies already in the state will include small businesses too. With fewer bureaucratic hurdles and a business-friendly state government, smaller companies are more likely to grow big, hire more people, and broaden the tax base.”

“Gov. Lamont mentioned today that the state has been too reliant on granting incentives to attract large companies to Connecticut which will resonate with small business owners. When small companies’ taxes go to pay for those costly incentives, it seems inherently unfair because it creates an uneven playing field.”
