Loss of jobs, financial hit to schools and state would happen, reports CBS 4
It’s one of the more impressive TV ads by opponents of Proposition 112. In it, Ken Salazar, a former Obama administration secretary of the interior and Colorado U.S. senator, is joined by former Republican Gov. Bill Owens and former Democratic Gov. Bill Ritter in sounding the alarm about what would happen if it passes.
But is any of it true?
Yes, reports CBS 4 political correspondent Shaun Boyd in one of her ‘Reality Check’ segments for the TV affiliate. Boyd documents the severe economic toll Proposition 112 would take on Colorado should it pass and challenges the claims made by its backers.
“Think what would happen if the oil and gas industry shut down in Weld County or other energy-rich counties in Colorado?” asked NFIB Colorado State Director Tony Gagliardi. “Every small business in Colorado will suffer immeasurable damages should Prop. 112 pass. There will be an estimated loss of 42,000 jobs in the first year. Those are 42,000 employees who will not be eating in restaurants or buying new furniture. Small businesses will be the victims because environmentalists have driven out their customers.”
