An adventure seeker talks about his passion-turned-business.

Name: Bill Swails

Business: EarthRoamer

Employees: 26

Location: Dacono, Colorado

Why did you start the company?

I wanted the ability to travel to remote places and camp for extended periods of time, and there was nothing on the market that met my needs. RVs weren’t built tough enough to travel to remote locations, and off-road-capable vehicles didn’t provide living accommodations.

What do you think are some of the reasons for your success?

Not compromising our design, continuously improving our products by implementing the latest technologies, and our close relationships with customers, employees and vendors.

What has surprised you about running your business?

How rewarding it is to see how many lives are positively impacted by our business and products. Receiving pictures and hearing stories from customers about the adventures they are experiencing with their EarthRoamer is very rewarding. Seeing employees live better lives because of the jobs we provide is very rewarding.

What have you not yet achieved that you would like to?

I’d like to drive an EarthRoamer around the world. One of our customers did, but I still haven’t.

What makes Colorado good for business?

Many people who live in Colorado share our passion for the outdoors, so it is easy to find people with the skill and passion to build our products and grow our business.

What does owning a business allow you to do that most people do not get to enjoy?

Travel. I’m in Beijing, China, right now, and my next stop is Thailand. I have a very capable business partner and management team that runs EarthRoamer so I can enjoy exploring the world.
