Filing Scam Targets Small Businesses

Date: July 16, 2019

The Colorado Secretary of State is warning business owners about flyer scams.

Small business owners in Colorado have become the targets of a business filing service scam that offers to regularly file certain documents for an additional processing fee. Some owners have reported receiving flyers, with official-looking information, through the mail.

The Secretary of State has advised local businesses to ignore these solicitations though they may seem legitimate. The flyers themselves contain the name of the business, its ID number and date of formation along with a customer ID number. However, all of this information aside from the “customer ID” is public record.

The flyers are misleading in that many of them do clearly state that they do not come from a government agency and are not in partnership with any government entity, but they also provide a warning that businesses are required to file in a timely manner. Some flyers also provided a deadline for when owners should reply by.

The state already has a filing system available to small business owners, for a much more affordable price, that will allow them to file online and receive notifications for when documents are due.

Small businesses are required to file certain documents in a timely manner should be cautious when it comes to third-party offers.
