Colorado Comment on Today’s NFIB Jobs Report

Date: September 03, 2020

How state might turn a glimmer of hope into a ray of economic sunshine

DENVER, Sept. 3, 2020—A small bit of good economic news emerged from NFIB’s Jobs Report today, prompting the state director for the small-business association which produces it to wonder how much better the news could be were Colorado to make a few changes.

“Our Jobs Report is not broken down by state, but you can’t help but wonder if small-business owning respondents in surrounding states didn’t have a rosier outlook because they’ve been given some liability protection against frivolous and almost unprovable COVID-19 lawsuits,” said Tony Gagliardi, NFIB’s Colorado state director. “We need to get this done or we will continue to lag behind other states. Just look where we stand in the just-released Rich States, Poor States annual report issued by the American Legislative Exchange Council—18th. Arizona came in 10th, Nevada 6th, Idaho 3rd, Wyoming 2nd, and Utah 1st.”

Today’s Jobs Report showed a seasonally adjusted net 21% of small businesses plan to create new jobs in the next three months. This is up 3 points from July and 20 points above April’s reading, an unprecedented recovery. The report is based on 751 respondents to the August survey of a random sample of NFIB’s member firms, surveyed through August 28, 2020.

Commented NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg, “The small business labor market is recovering and moving in the right direction. Small businesses are planning to hire more workers, keep employees on the payroll, and their customers happy. However, there is still uncertainty and many small businesses are counting on additional financial assistance.”
