NFIB in Thick of Fight for Prop. 13

Date: December 16, 2019

Small businesses help deliver 200,000 petitions to legislators’ offices

With the help of NFIB California, The Fight for Prop 13 coalition had a busy and productive December, delivering more than 200,000 petitions to legislators’ offices urging them to protect Prop 13.

An NFIB study found only 22 percent of small-business owners own the property on which they operate. The majority lease or rent their property. “Without Prop 13’s protections, property owners will have no choice but to pass along higher property taxes to small businesses by raising rents,” said John Kabateck, NFIB’s California state director. “If they manage to stay in business, which isn’t a guarantee, small-business owners will be forced to increase their prices to consumers just to make ends meet.”

On December 10, Darrell Feil, NFIB California’s leadership council chairman and owner of Abate-A-Weed in Bakersfield joined a Bakersfield news conference announcing delivery of the petitions to area legislators.

NFIB State Director John Kabateck took part in a December 16 news conference at El Indio, an NFIB member business in San Diego. Joining Kabateck were:

  • Jennifer Pesqueria, owner of El Indio Mexican Restaurant and Catering
  • San Diego County Assessor Ernie Dronenburg
  • Jason Paguio, president and CEO the Asian Business Association of San Diego
  • San Diego Councilmember Chris Cate
