Assembly Bill 5 Brings Together Opponents, Supporters for Panel Discussion

Date: June 10, 2020

NFIB’s participation helped shine a light on the struggle independent contractors face

On one side of the debate were Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, author of Assembly Bill 5, and Steve Smith with the California Labor Federation-AFL-CIO, a supporter of the measure.

On the other side were Assemblyman Vince Fong and NFIB California State Director John Kabateck, both pointing out the many drawbacks of the law.

In the middle were journalists Judy Lin of CalMatters and Sophia Bollag of The Sacramento Bee.

The Sacramento Press Club brought together all six for a June 9 panel discussion on the law, which is either having negative and unintended consequences on the California economy, employment opportunities, and independent contracting, according to the Fong, Kabateck side, or it’s working as the long-overdue corrective it was meant to be, to see it from the Gonzalez and Smith side.

The hour-long panel discussion can be watched by clicking the arrow below. Former journalist and current Sacramento Press Club President Dan Morain welcomes the participants.
