NFIB Endorses Tom Cotton for U.S. Senate

Date: July 01, 2014

The National Federation of Independent Business, Arkansas’ and America’s leading small-business association, today endorsed Tom Cotton for the U.S. Senate.

“Our members support the members of Congress who support small business, and Congressman Cotton’s record speaks for itself,” said Lisa Goeas, NFIB vice president for Political and Grassroots. “He understands that we can’t afford to burden Arkansas’ and America’s job creators with unnecessary regulations and excessive taxes that make it even harder for them to grow and create jobs.”

As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Tom Cotton has earned a 100-percent NFIB voting record in the current Congress, supporting key bills concerning the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) (H.R. 1120), improving the nation’s supply of affordable energy (H.R. 3, H.R. 2728 and H.R. 2231) and providing flexible family leave options (H.R. 1406). He has also taken the small-business position on delaying the individual mandate in the federal health-care law (H.R. 2668) and reducing frivolous lawsuits (H.R. 2655).

“Tom Cotton has consistently supported Arkansas’s small, family businesses,” said Sylvester Smith, state director of NFIB/Arkansas. “He listens to what our members have to say, and he’s done everything he can to create an environment where they can succeed.

“Tom Cotton clearly understands the challenges facing our small-business owners, their employees and their families,” Smith said. “His commitment, his record and his energy and enthusiasm make him far and away the best candidate for Senate.”

NFIB has 4,000 dues-paying members in Arkansas representing a cross section of the state’s economy. Cotton’s endorsement comes from NFIB’s SAFE (Save America’s Free Enterprise) Trust, the association’s political action committee.

The group endorses candidates based on their voting records on key issues identified by its members such as health care, taxes, labor and regulatory issues. NFIB tracks the votes of every member of Congress and the respective state legislatures.  Cotton is challenging Senator Mark Pryor, who only has a lifetime NFIB Voting Record of 50 percent.  “Arkansas small business owners deserve much better representation in the United States Senate,” said Goeas, who heads the organization’s political and grassroots operation.

“This is a really interesting race and will be among the most competitive in the nation,” she said. “It could determine whether we have a US Senate that genuinely supports small business or whether it remains a rubber stamp for policies that damage the economy.”

Small-business owners and their employees vote in high numbers and are known for actively recruiting friends, family members and acquaintances to go to the polls. NFIB will encourage its members to help turn out the small-business vote in November.
