PHOENIX, May 7, 2020—From Chad Heinrich, NFIB Arizona state director:

“Small-business owners understand firsthand the difficult decisions that have had to be made as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many have temporarily closed their businesses or are working on a fraction of their normal workload.

“Our governor and legislative leaders have worked to properly position Arizona to weather this health emergency and open Arizona for business again—as soon as it is safe and practical.

“Bipartisan legislative accomplishments like finalizing the fiscal year 2021 budget and providing the Arizona Department of Health Services resources to address the coronavirus public-health emergency are two key accomplishments done prior to adjourning in March.

“While there is always more legislative work to be done, there also needs to be a safe place to conduct business and accommodate the many voices that support the Legislature’s work and deliberations. At this time, adjourning sine die is the most prudent and informed decision.

“Business owners appreciate the leadership that Gov. Doug Ducey has provided through a measured, data-driven approach to reopening Arizona.

“Many Arizona small businesses have locations in more than one city or town, and it is important to them that Arizona maintains a statewide approach—allowing health data to inform decisions rather than local jurisdictional boundaries.

“It’s important that Arizonans and our elected leaders trust business owners as the reopening of Arizona begins. Businesses have the guidelines and the ability to prepare their businesses to open when it is safe to do so.

“Ultimately, the reopening of Arizona comes down to confidence. Businesses need to be confident that they can open their businesses in a manner that is safe for their employees and customers while also not falling into a legal trap by doing so. Employees need to be confident that their employer is providing a safe place for them to work. And ultimately, customers need to be confident that both the business owner and the employees are taking all reasonable precautions to provide a safe environment for them.”
