Just when small businesses are showing signs of life, things like Prop. 208 loom

PHOENIX, Oct. 2, 2020—From Chad Heinrich, Arizona state director for NFIB, which released its monthly Jobs Report yesterday.
“NFIB’s latest Jobs Report shows that small business owners are still struggling but gaining some traction in their bid to move America’s economy forward. The report revives the theme of employers struggling to find qualified workers. Unfortunately, if Prop 208 passes in Arizona, the table will be turned. Instead of small businesses having trouble finding workers, workers will have trouble finding jobs. A recent economic report estimates, under the most conservative scenario, that Prop 208 will result in at least 124,000 lost jobs over the course of 10 years. A number of lost jobs four times greater than Arizona’s workers experienced during the Great Recession. The true costs of Prop. 208 make for sobering reading. It’s up to us if we want to follow the road to economic recovery or if we want huge potholes in it like Prop. 208. I hope voters see not only what a bad initiative it is but also how badly timed it is.”
According to NFIB’s Jobs report, “10% of owners reported increasing employment on an average of 3.2 workers per firms,” and “a net 23% (seasonally adjusted) of owners plan to create jobs in the next three months, up 2 points from the August report and 22 points above April’s report.”
NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg said in the report, “Small employers are taking every step they can to keep their businesses open and employees on staff. COVID-19 restrictions and regulations put on small businesses vary by state, but we are starting to see a jobs recovery as small businesses continue to increase business operations.”
