Governor Requests Small Businesses’ Input on Regulations

Date: February 13, 2019

NFIB members asked to take a quick survey on their experiences with red tape

Gov. Mike Dunleavy has issued a call to small businesses in Alaska to forward to him ideas on regulatory reform and improving government efficiency.

In order for NFIB to advocate for small business and to aid in his efforts at “right sizing government,” we need our members’ input.

NFIB members are being sent an Action Alert by email. When taking the survey, please consider these reform ideas:

  • Suggestions should be limited to state of Alaska regulations.
  • Think of things that you do routinely in your business to comply with state requirements that don’t seem to make sense. (Dual licensing requirements or reporting redundancies are examples.)
  • Think of fees that you pay that are redundant or paper reports that you file that could be electronic.
  • Think about compliance requirements that are outdated because of new technology.
  • How can lawmakers and the governor help make the process more streamlined and keep more money in your business?

The more members we have, the louder we speak, and the more the small-business message is remembered by the policymakers whose laws our enterprises must abide by. One of NFIB’s eternal missions is to remind elected officials that small businesses aren’t smaller versions of big businesses. They have different difficulties in remaining solvent. The reason NFIB is considered the true voice of small business is that its membership is made up entirely of small-business owners.

From Governor Dunleavy

“Rather than starting with the bloated budgets of the past and asking ourselves ‘where do we cut,’ we did exactly what Alaskan families and small businesses are forced to do when faced with financial hardship. We started from the ground floor and built an annual budget where the amount we spend aligns with the amount we bring in, an approach that built a budget up rather than reducing a budget down.

“We must reset the spending clock and realign expenditures with the realities we face today. We must transform government at its core, right-size spending, eliminate duplication and prioritize programs to match our reality.”
