JUNEAU, Alaska, Oct. 23, 2018—Alaska’s leading small-business association announced today that it has honored Senate President Pete Kelly with a Guardian of Small Business Award.

Denny DeWitt, Alaska state director for NFIB, praised Kelly for killing two tax bills especially harmful for small business in the last session of the Legislature. “Since his days in the State House, Sen. Pete Kelly has stood side by side with small business,” said DeWitt. “His ability to stop bad bills from passing while pushing through ones beneficial for Main Street makes him small businesses’ most valuable player in the upper house.”

Senator Pete Kelly subscribes to the philosophy that government should not make the survival of small businesses in Alaska more difficult than it already is, according to DeWitt. He understands that small businesses are unique in their needs and contributions to Alaska’s economy—they are not small versions of big businesses.

Added former Sen. Mike Miller, owner of Santa Claus House in North Pole, “I served with Pete Kelly and know his commitment to small business. Senator Kelly knows that small businesses are families providing services and jobs in our communities and a large part of the economy in our state.” Miller is the northern region vice chairman of NFIB Alaska’s leadership council.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, 99 percent of all businesses in Alaska are small businesses, which employ 53 percent of the state’s workforce.
