How OPPAL Helps Alabama Business Owners

Date: October 31, 2017

It’s now easier to file your business personal property taxes.

Alabama business owners have until Jan. 31, 2018, to file their business personal property tax returns through the Optional Personal Property Assessment Link (OPPAL) web portal, which opened on Oct. 1.

OPPAL was created with NFIB-endorsed legislation and launched in 2016. It’s an optional, free, reporting-only web portal that gives Alabama business owners a more efficient way to report their business personal property online, such as equipment, tools, and machinery. These electronically filed returns contain the same information that’s included in standard paper tax returns, and they are submitted to the county assessing official or applicable agency where tax returns are required to be filed. OPPAL is only used for filing business personal property tax returns, not for administration or enforcement of business personal property taxes.

During its inaugural filing season in 2016, more than 28,000 Alabama taxpayers used OPPAL. For more information, visit https://www.oppal.alabama.gov/WebForm/Home/Index.
