An Update from Your NFIB/Maryland State Director

Date: December 15, 2015

Dear NFIB/Maryland Members,

Happy Holidays! I want to take a moment to share with you the latest as we come down the homestretch before the Maryland General Assembly convenes for the 2016 legislative session.

First, more shoppers reported visiting their local independent businesses on Small Business Saturday than ever before. Spending reached $16.2 billion this year, a 14% increase from 2014. Thank you to all our Neighborhood Champions who helped organize local events with shops and restaurants.

There has also been some good news out of Annapolis. Members in Democratic leadership have signaled they do not expect mandated paid leave to pass this year despite proponents promising to make its passage a priority. NFIB along with its partner organizations will remain vigilant on the issue as it is sure to remain atop labor’s agenda. Legislators still need to hear from the business community on the impact this legislation will have on their operation.

Thanks are also due to the dozens of NFIB members who took time to testify before the Governor’s Regulatory Reform Commission. The Commission’s report was published on December 3 with suggestions offered by NFIB members found throughout. The report can be found here.

Finally, the business community is anxiously awaiting the recommendations of the Economic Development and Business Climate Commission. Reports indicate the Commission is considering reforms to personal income tax rates and accelerating the timeline for Maryland to match the federal estate tax exemption.

As always, please contact our offices if you have a question on these or other issues. We are here to help. Have a happy and safe holiday season.

All the Best,

Mike O’Halloran

NFIB/Maryland State Director
