NFIB Tennessee: What This Election Means to Your Small Business

Date: September 12, 2016 Last Edit: September 14, 2016

Brown: Election Day is less than two months away.

Election Day is less than two months away. It’s a big one.

There are a few key races at the state level, but overall not much is expected to change in the way of gains or losses for either major political party.

The national elections, however, will have a tremendous impact on the next two years and beyond. Will Republicans maintain their majority in the Senate, or will Democrats regain control? Who will win the White House? Why is this so important?

  • The significant overreach from the executive branch and runaway federal agencies must be stopped. Congress has struggled to assert itself effectively to date. The next president will either rein in the red tape or roll out more. Who wins matters.
  • This election is big for small businesses that are either suffering or in limbo on many key issues—the overtime rule, the EPA’s Waters of the U.S. and Clean Power Plan efforts, the NLRB’s complete abandonment of being an impartial arbiter in labor disputes, and the threat of many more mandates like paid leave and minimum wage.
  • With the courts legislating more than ever and activist judges allowed to stay on the bench for now, judicial appointments are a huge issue.

As you digest these important matters, it is important to say NFIB will continue to fight for you and your business – in the courts, legislature and elsewhere – until the separation of powers is reinvigorated, states assert their rights more, and important reforms to check the advancing federal bureaucracy and current dysfunction of government are adopted.

As always, I encourage you to be forceful and positive as we seek changes that will preserve free enterprise and our valued constitutional rights.
