Small Business Celebrating Sales Tax Holiday This Weekend in Massachusetts

Date: August 09, 2018

It's a way for families to support local small-business owners

BOSTON (August 9, 2018) – NFIB, the leading small-business association, is encouraging consumers to shop at their local small businesses during Massachusetts’ sales tax holiday this weekend, August 11 and 12.

“Labor costs are on the rise in our state and this sales tax holiday encourages increased consumer spending, which should temporarily offset some of those additional expenses for small businesses,” said Christopher Carlozzi, NFIB’s state director in Massachusetts. “The return of the sales tax holiday after a two-year absence is a welcome breath of fresh air because small companies are now facing a $15 minimum wage, a very costly paid family and medical leave mandate, and a new a MassHealth tax. These legislative policies have placed a major burden on small, independent businesses.”

During Massachusetts’ sales tax holiday, the usual 6.25% state sales tax will not be charged on certain items costing less than $2500.

“With families focused on back to school shopping at a time when retail activities generally slow down the sales tax holiday in mid-August is perfect for small businesses. By shopping on Main Street, consumers are supporting their local communities and bolstering local entrepreneurs, while saving tax dollars and taking advantage of additional promotions,” according to Carlozzi.

“Small businesses support local schools and families by paying taxes, making charitable contributions, and offering employment opportunities to parents and students. Participating in the sales tax holiday weekend is a great way to support the small businesses that support our communities every year,” Carlozzi concluded.
