State Fee Scam Targeting Small Business Owners in Oregon

Date: December 04, 2018

If you’ve recently received a notice in the mail from Workplace Compliance Services, you may want to skip the trip to the post office. Consumer protection agencies are warning small business owners of a recent scam targeting businesses in Oregon.

As many as 15 complaints have been filed to the Attorney General’s office with additional business owners filing complaints to the Portland Business Bureau.

The scam is delivered in the form of a notice charging business owners to pay $175 to register with the Oregon Secretary of State’s Office. If business owners fail to file the $100 state fee and $75 registration fee, they may be at risk of being charged with penalties.

“You don’t need to pay money to have these forms filled out, you can do it yourself right online,” Stephen Mayer with the Portland Better Business Bureau said. “The Secretary of State issued an alert as well, so we’re trying to get the word out.”
