Small Businesses are Pillars of the Community and Country

Date: September 26, 2018

NFIB-commissioned research shines a light on how many American adults view the impact of small business--economically, culturally, and representatively.

It’s no secret small business owners are a foundational support to this country’s economy. In fact, small businesses made up 99.9 percent of U.S. businesses and created 1.9 million net new jobs in 2017, according to a 2018 report by the Small Business Administration.

A longtime advocate for small business owners, NFIB understands the importance of small business and its contributions to local communities and economies. NFIB-commissioned research conducted by Morning Consult shines a light on how many American adults view the impact of small business—economically, culturally, and representatively.

Furthermore, the study finds that Americans trust small business owners to represent them in elected office. They believe owners understand their communities, and they trust them to make decisions that better their local economy.

“When Americans go to work or buy services, food, and household goods, they are often entering a small business. This survey quantifies how deeply ingrained this sector is across the country,” says Juanita Duggan, NFIB President and CEO. “Small business owners know the community, and the community knows them. Americans clearly want elected officials to listen to and learn from small businesses for the betterment of the community.”
