Small Business Responds to Obama Veto
on Ambush Elections

POTUS makes another straw man
argument, says NFIB

Washington,
DC (March 31, 2015)

– President Obama’s decision today to veto a congressional resolution aimed at
giving small businesses a fair chance to get legal advice, talk to employees
and prepare for labor elections tilts the game heavily in favor of unions, said
the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) today.

“The
President’s action allows labor organizers to plan in secret for months to hold
an election for which business owners will have only 10 days to
prepare.   So the owners are under the shot clock and the unions can
take as much time as they need to score,” said NFIB President and CEO Dan
Danner
.

Last week
Congress passed resolutions that would have reversed a decision by the National
Labor Relations Board (NLRB) allowing labor unions to notify businesses only 10
days before workers vote on whether to organize.  Previously employers had
at least a month to seek legal counsel and talk to their employees about the
potential ramifications.

“The move is
clearly intended to give unions an advantage,” said Danner.

The
President said that allowing employers more time to prepare would make it
“impossible” for workers to organize.

“There’s a union election somewhere almost every day,” said
Danner.  “So that’s obviously a dramatization.  Most small business
owners don’t have a labor attorney on staff.  It could take 10 days just
to find one and get a meeting.  What the President wants is to influence
the outcome of union elections by making it harder for local business owners to
make their case.”
