Minimum Wage Hikes: Montgomery and Prince George's Counties

The
first of four minimum wage hikes in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties
went into effect on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 and will raise minimum wage to
$8.40 per hour. As a result, employers in both counties should be aware that
employees must be paid at least $8.40 per hour beginning October 1.

The minimum wage will increase
to $9.55 per hour on Oct. 1, 2015, to $10.75 per hour on Oct. 1, 2016 and
finally to $11.50 per hour in 2017.

In November 2013, the
County Council passed
a
bill
to raise the minimum wage to $11.50 per hour by October 2017,
following after Prince George’s County and D.C., which passed the same minimum
wage legislation. in a series of wage raises that will go into effect each
October.

The rest of Maryland will
not see a change in the current minimum wage until January 1, 2015 when it will
increase to $8.00 an hour, and will jump a second time to $8.25 that July.
Additional increases are as follows: July 1, 2016: $8.75. July 1, 2017: $9.25.
