Denver Among Metro Areas With Less Unemployment For Women Than Men

According to an analysis of data from the US Census’ American Community Survey conducted by online economic website Headlight, Denver is among the top 10 US metro job markets for women. Ranking eighth out of 52 metro areas, Denver has “zero difference between the unemployment rates of female workers ages 25-64 compared to male workers in the same age group,” according to the Denver Business Journal report of the survey. Overall, 85% of the 52 biggest US metro areas see higher unemployment rates among women than men. Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce CEO Donna Evans, commenting on the survey, touted Colorado’s “diversity in industries.” She explained, “We have a very balanced business segment in Colorado. It used to be that we relied on one or two industries, but now we’re so diverse. And I think that makes it a lot easier for women to find jobs.” Furthermore, she noted metro Denver’s 4.2% overall unemployment rate, well below the national average. Evans also speculated that Colorado’s rate of unemployment might be affected by “the recent surge of oil and gas layoffs, an industry typically dominated by men, as well as the shortage in construction industry jobs.”

What This Means For Small Businesses

Small business owners in Denver need encouraging signals that the metro area’s economy is strong. Data showing the city has a lower unemployment rate for women than much of the US could in particular be encouraging for female-owned and operated small businesses, but is also likely an indicator of a more business-friendly community.
