I-9 and E-Verify Laws for Small Business: Immigration Law Update

Increasingly, States are taking the lead on immigration law enforcement through mandatory use of E-Verify, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Internet-based program that helps employers predict employment eligibility of new hires based on social security number verification with SSA and work status verification with DHS.

Christina Wallace, a nationally recognized attorney, who dedicates her practice to immigration law, will walk business owners through the E-verify program. Ms. Wallace will explain what E-Verify is, discuss the latest statistics on enrollment by size and type of employer, the pros and cons of enrollment in the Internet-based system, and most importantly the dos and don’ts of the program. She’ll also give a rundown of which states now mandate E-Verify for employers doing business within their borders on a state, county or municipal level. She will review the basics of the Form I-9, which must still be maintained by all employers and go over the FAR Clause mandating E-Verify for government contractors.
