U.S. government launches campaign to keep recalled products out of resale stores

Owners of resale shops and thrift stores need to be aware that the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission has launched a campaign to keep recalled products off of resale store shelves and the Internet.

The campaign, called "Resale Roundup," stems from the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, which increases penalties for merchants who knowingly sell recalled and defective products. As of right now, the maximum penalties for knowingly violating the law are a $100,000 fine.

Resellers should check the CPSC web site regularly to check for recalled product updates.

Resellers can download the CPSC Guidebook for Resale Stores and Product Resellers. Affected businesses should also visit the CPSC’s revamped web site with information for resellers.
