Here's a look at some of the issues NFIB/Georgia will be addressing in the 2013 legislative session:

Elimination of the State Income Tax: NFIB supports proposed legislation to amend Georgia's Constitution; cap and phase out the state income tax over a period of time. The income tax is one of the top state competitiveness issues for small business in Georgia.

Fighting Costly Health Insurance Mandates: Each year we fight efforts to increase mandated benefits on small business insurance plans that reduce flexibility and increase cost for business owners and their employees.

Junk Lawsuit Abuse Reform. NFIB/Georgia supports legislation to help cut down on the number of junk and frivolous lawsuits filed against small business. We will advocate for legislation that ensures a fair and predictable legal climate for small business.

Finding a long-term solution to the state's unemployment problem. NFIB/Georgia will continue to promote and advocate for policies that help Georgians get back to work. We also must address the dire fiscal situation facing the state's unemployment trust fund while protecting small business from exorbitant tax increases.

Here's a look at some of the issue facing NFIB/Kentucky:

Defeat any attempt to add sales tax on labor and services

A Tax "Reform" Task Force has been appointed to review the tax code. Placing a tax on labor disproportionately impacts small businesses who must hire out services such as a CPA, insurance, repairs of equipment etc. We will fight any attempt to place more tax burden on small business. This includes the continued fight to expand the tourism area meals tax to the entire state. 2014 will be a budget year and defense against tax increases will be our #1 priority.

Defeat additional healthcare mandates that add cost to premiums
We will fight to stop efforts to require small businesses to cover additional conditions and treatments. Such mandates may be well intentioned, but they drive up the cost of health insurance and make it harder for small employers to afford even basic medical coverage.

Continue to fight for the Sole Proprietor
The Unions and those who think the little guy don't pay their appropriate level of taxes will always attempt to remove the 1099 status of an individual and force expensive filing for LLC or sub chapter S to operate - even without employees. NFIB will fight this thinking that presents itself at any level. Entrepreneurs' do not need to be burdened with unnecessary tax structures that do not fit their business needs.

Fight for Small Business in Implementation of State Health Insurance Exchange

Kentucky is creating a Health Insurance Exchange as part of Obamacare. NFIB will be working to minimize any burdens that may fall on small business in excess of federal requirements.

Create Drug Free Workplace Program

NFIB is championing a program that will education employees about the dangers of addiction. If it is found that an employee's intoxication or drug use has caused an accident, the employee would receive no worker's comp benefits and would not be eligible for unemployment if terminated.

NFIB/Mississippi is fighting to:

Make self-employment taxes deductible for small business owners

This would save small business owners more than $10 million in state income taxes..

Limit Premises Liability

NFIB is working to pass legislation providing businesses greater protection from costly premises liability lawsuits.

Pass exemption of the Business Personal Property Tax

NFIB is working to pass legislation to exempt the first $20,000 of business furniture, fixtures and equipment from the local business personal property tax, savingbusinesses an estimated$29 million.

Small Business Economic Trends - May 2013

After last month's disappointing drop in small business confidence, April's Index of Small Business Optimism rose 2.6 points to 92.1, just above the recovery average of 90.7. In April's report, 4 Index components rose, 2 fell and 4 were unchanged. Yet pessimism abounds within the sector, as still far more of those surveyed expect business conditions to be worse in 6 months than those who think they will be better.

Here's a look at some issues NFIB/Tennessee will be facing in the 2014 legislative session:

Tax reform: NFIB continues to advocate strongly for legislation that would enable taxpayers under audit to appeal to a tax tribunal independent from the Department of Revenue. With your help, we hope this bill will pass soon. Lawmakers are also expected to continue discussing a reduction in the franchise and excise and professional privilege taxes.

Workers' compensation reform: NFIB will continue to monitor the implementation of the new law, with an immediate eye to rules and regulations that will be issued the next year.

Healthcare reform: As the nation continues to adjust to uncertainties and burdens imposed by Obamacare, Tennessee will be making decisions on healthcare issues impacting our members. NFIB will remain vigilant in protecting our members from further excessive costs related to healthcare.

Monitor and improve the budget process: ?Our members believe government should be run with discipline like most entrepreneurs manage their operations. We will ?continue to protect small businesses from harmful tax proposals and to encourage government leaders to reduce unnecessary spending. Our members believe all substantive tax proposals must be debated openly through the normal legislative process, not through end-of-session "technical ?corrections" bills that resemble Washington-style legislation.

Tort reform: NFIB is working with other business interests to regulate the "lawsuit lending" industry, also known as litigation financing. Next year, we expect legislation that will enact reasonable regulations to protect consumers and limit speculative lawsuits.
