National Agenda in the Interest of Small Business Owners

Competition
Main Street needs a voice fighting for a truly free market. NFIB plays that critical role, advocating legislative solutions that create fair competition and a level playing field for small business and small business owners.
Government and Regulatory Reform
Regulatory compliance costs are significantly higher for small firms than for large firms. NFIB is working to make regulations less costly and less complicated for small business.
Healthcare
Finding and affording quality health insurance is the top concern of small business owners. NFIB's top priority is to fight for solutions that make health insurance more affordable and accessible for small business owners and their employees.
Immigration
On Thursday, June 28, the Senate failed to invoke cloture, or limit debate, on the comprehensive immigration reform bill, S. 1639. The motion failed 46-53. The bill is most likely dead for the year as the Senate majority leader is unlikely to schedule floor time for the bill and House leaders have said that they would not take up an immigration reform bill if the Senate was unable to pass one. NFIB is following this legislation closely and is actively working to make sure that small business' views are heard during the debate. Small business supports secure borders and a workable document verification system and opposes amnesty.
Labor Issues
Small business owners know that their employees are their most valuable resource, and they work hard to train and retain these employees. NFIB is working to simplify the employment process for small business and eliminate burdensome mandates and regulations.
Legal Reform
Just one frivolous lawsuit can force a small business to close its doors forever. NFIB is fighting on Capitol Hill and in all 50 states to level the courtroom playing field for small business.
Social Security Reform
NFIB advocates four principles to ensure Social Security reform is fair to small businesses: payroll taxes must not be increased; paperwork burdens must be reduced; retired workers should continue to receive benefits; and individually controlled personal retirement accounts should be a major part.
Tax Relief
Taxes that are too high, and a system that is ridiculously complex, stand in the way of small business growth. NFIB is fighting for small-business tax relief on several fronts at both the state and federal levels.
Technology Issues
Technology will play a vital role in keeping small businesses competitive so they can survive over the next century. NFIB is making sure that small business has a seat at the table when changes to current policy are being made or new policies governing technology are being formulated.
Energy
Small business owners depend on energy supplies at globally competitive prices to operate and effectively run their businesses. Today, small business owners are finding themselves in a financial crunch as the cost of diesel and fuel oil, natural gas and propane continue to skyrocket.
