Ledbetter Fair Pay Act
S. 1843, the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2007, is a poorly conceived and overly broad piece of legislation that will impose significant and unforeseen costs on small business. It is very likely the Senate will vote on this bill when it reconvenes after August recess. A similar version of this bill, H.R. 2381, was already passed in the House of Representatives.
Should this erroneous legislation become law, small-businesses owners would be forced to defend employment decisions that occurred in the distant past in cases that could be brought by employees relying on circumstantial evidence and uncorroborated testimony. Furthermore, this bill contains a "pension annuity check rule" which would allow charges to be filed against an employer so long as an employee receives benefits, such as retirement benefits.
Contact your senators now to tell them to vote "NO" on S. 1843. In order for small businesses to grow and prosper in the future, it is crucial that this bill be defeated.
