Office of Surface Mining

The Office of Surface Mining is responsible for making sure that land is protected during coal mining, and is properly reclaimed after the mining has completed on federal lands, Indian reservations and in Tennessee and Washington state. OSM issues coal permits, conducts inspections and enforces mining regulations in these locations. All other mining states have their own enforcement agencies.
