Junk-Food Lawsuits Attempt to Hold Businesses Responsible for Consumers' Habits

Recent lawsuits against food manufacturers have caused great concern for small-business owners who already pay a high price under our nation's troubled legal system. Trial lawyers have turned their sights on the food industry and have filed lawsuits blaming cookies and fast food for plaintiffs' weight and health problems. These lawsuits have been thrown out of court, but more are expected, and small-business owners are concerned that some of these suits will ultimately be successful. Trial lawyers, using the same tactics they used in asbestos and tobacco lawsuits, are charging that fast-food restaurants have acted negligently or deceptively in selling products high in cholesterol, fat, salt and sugar.
