Kentucky State Victories
The following NFIB victories will make a real difference for your business.

Recent NFIB/Kentucky victories:

Supported small-business exemption from Alternative Minimum Tax
NFIB/Kentucky led the fight to exempt small-business owners with less than $3 million gross profits or gross revenues from the Alternative Minimum Tax.

Supported ICARE small-business health insurance program
The ICARE legislation allows Kentucky to open its health insurance markets to insurers from surrounding states and contains incentives for small businesses to start or continue their small-group health programs, keeping more insureds in the market. The incentive provides between $40-60 a month per employee to the employer for those employees meeting eligibility requirements to enroll. The pool also makes it attractive for insurers to enter the Kentucky market.

Defeated expansion of sales tax to services
Under the tax modernization proposals, there was a plan to expand the six percent sales tax to specifically include services such as dry cleaning, automobile repairs, maintenance, etc. It would have excluded legal, medical, advertising and accounting services. NFIB/Kentucky stood firmly against this proposal, and it failed.

Worked to amend unclaimed wages statute
Under the old law, employers were required to hold unclaimed wages as open items on their books for seven years, and then turn the funds over to the state treasury. Now unclaimed wages under $50 only have to be kept for one year then can be written off and returned to the business.

Supported passage of Truth in Hiring protection
Recently Kentucky passed limited immunity against lawsuits, when obtaining honest and accurate references on a former employee.

VICTORY: 2002 -- NFIB/Kentucky successfully fought for the amendment of the Telemarketing law to provide protection from prosecution for small businesses in inadvertent violation of the zero-call list.

VICTORY: 2002 -- Kentucky's fiscal problems continue to worsen, tempting lawmakers to look at new taxes as a way of providing revenue. NFIB/Kentucky will remain vigilant in the fight against reforms that would cost small-business owners more of their hard-earned money.

VICTORY: NFIB successfully fought the passage of legislation would have created a new $1000 annual tax on all retail establishments in Kentucky to fund litter removal. NFIB soundly defeated this measure in the 2000 General Assembly.
