NFIB Creates Safety CD to Help Small-Business Owners Create Safety Plan
05/ 29/ 2003

NFIB, the nation's largest small-business advocacy group, has unveiled a software product that will aid business owners in creating safety manuals and training programs customized to their needs. The NFIB Workplace Safety CD is an easy-to-use software program that will help small-business owners to create customized safety manuals.

"Companies want to operate safe workplaces and need to comply with safety and environmental regulations," said Jeff Koch, director of insurance operations for the 600,000-member NFIB. "The problem is owners of small businesses often do not know what is required of them or even where to begin to look for help.

"According to the 2002 NFIB National Small Business Poll on Workplace Safety, nearly 52 percent of all small-business owners with fewer than 10 employees lack a written safety plan.

"Lack of a written plan can result in fines or increase the amount of fines for safety standards violations," Koch said. "It also suggests to employees and regulators that safety is not a priority."

With a wealth of user-friendly safety information, the NFIB Workplace Safety Manual CD is designed to put a professional safety program within reach of every small business. Studies show that profitability can improve when loss prevention and training programs are implemented.

"Safety is smart business - it keeps employees on the job, boosts productivity, and reduces waste and damage to equipment and inventory," said Koch. "Simply put, doing the right thing is also the right thing for a business' bottom line."

The Workplace Safety CD includes the safety manual tool, workplace safety audit checklists, training program information, safety meeting material, OSHA eTools including the Hazard Awareness Advisor and dozens of links to other safety resources on the Internet. The program requires Windows 98 or higher and is not available for Macintosh users.

The NFIB Workplace Safety CD is available through Safety Shorts, a national distributor of workplace safety videos, by calling 800-458-2236. At $79.95, NFIB members receive a substantial discount over the $149.95 non-member price. Other Safety Shorts videos can be ordered over the phone or by fax using the special order form for NFIB members available in the Member Benefits section of the NFIB Web site at www.NFIB.com.

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is the nation's largest small-business advocacy group. A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization founded in 1943, NFIB represents the consensus views of its 600,000 members in Washington and all 50 state capitals.
