Statement of AAFD Chair, Robert Purvin, posted at www.change.gov, the Obama Transition Team website, on November 22, 2008:
Dear President-Elect Obama:
Don't forget the huge potential of business format franchising to stimulate business investment and job growth (most administrations have given little attention to the greatest driver of small business in America). At the same time, the franchising community is fraught with abusive practices that have given the community a black eye. Many of these abuses are detailed in my book, "The Franchise Fraud: How to Protect Yourself Before and After You Invest."
Franchising can be a hugely valuable tool in America's economic recovery--focusing on Main Street as President-Elect Obama has urged. For more information contact the American Association of Franchisees & Dealers, the Center for Total Quality Franchising by visiting our website, www.aafd.org.
We have a plan to inspire a self-regulated franchising community that can drive small business growth and employment in a time of severe economic contraction--without asking government to prop up failed enterprises.
Bob Purvin, Chairman
