Palladino: A hoops feast in the city
The Copper will be boiling over tonight and Friday evening. A pair of Naugatuck Valley League Copper Division showdowns are set in the Naugatuck Valley League, and assuming that a passing cloud doesn’t scare the bejabbers out of us and force a postponement, area basketball fans will enjoy a hoop feast over the next two evenings.

Giants' Jacobs back at practice and ready to go
New York Giants leading rusher Brandon Jacobs returned to practice on Wednesday and pronounced himself ready to go for the NFC semifinal against the Philadelphia Eagles. Jacobs missed the regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings because of season-long problems with his left knee. He hurt it early in the season and aggravated it against the Eagles in a loss on Dec. 7.
Girls notebook: Wolcott Tech earns respect
Is there a better feel-good story these days than coach Mark Eucalitto’s Wolcott Tech girls basketball team? For so long the doormat of the Berkshire League and often the butt of many jokes after losing 265 straight varsity games over 19 years, the Wildcats have posted a pair of wins this season over Gilbert and Nonnewaug that only bode well for the much maligned program.

Could it be that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is a racist who is trying to sell Barack Obama's Senate seat to the highest bidder? It certainly looks that way. Federal investigators caught Sen. Reid twisting Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich's arm to try to stop him from naming Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. or Rep. Danny Davis, both of whom are black, as Mr. Obama's successor. Sen. Reid made it clear he would prefer Tammy Duckworth, the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs director, or Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan. His Madigan advocacy is fascinating because besides being the daughter of Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, the king of pay-to-play politics in Illinois, she was the one who tried unsuccessfully to get Gov. Blagojevich declared politically insane to strip him of his lawful right to pick Mr. Obama's successor. In retrospect, her effort comes off as an attempt to grease her own senatorial skids. "The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress." — Frederick Douglass. In early 2008, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson assured the nation the cornerstone of the feds' $168 billion economic-stimulus plan (the $600 tax rebates) would generate "500,000 to 600,000 additional jobs this year." A wealth of data now proves the rebates were wholly unstimulating. About 2 million Americans have lost their jobs since the checks went out in May, and unemployment is at a 15-year high.
