The vast majority of both Republican and Democratic politicians are pushing for increased governmental intervention in energy markets. In "The Case against Government Intervention in Energy Markets," author Richard L. Gordon argues that the prevailing policy proposals are premised on a misunderstanding of energy economics and market realities. Intervention, says Gordon, would only serve to repeat and extend previous errors.
The Federal Reserve and Treasury Department this past week announced a pair of new programs that will provide roughly $800 billion to increase the availability of consumer and mortgage lending. Lawmakers have also indicated recently that Congress would return in December to consider providing a $25 billion bridge loan to troubled U.S. automakers if the companies could show a "viable" recovery plan. Cato scholars have long been critical of government intervention in the financial markets (and the auto industry).
