Retired DEM Chief of Compliance and Inspection Receives Coveted Environmental Merit Award from EPA

Dean Albro, the former chief of the Department of Environmental Management's Office of Compliance and Inspection, has received the US Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Merit Award from EPA Regional Administrator Robert W. Varney. Albro recently retired from DEM after 30 years of state service. (More info)

New State Record Set for Largest Striped Bass Caught in Rhode Island Waters

Congratulations to Peter Vican of East Greenwich, who has set a new Rhode Island State Saltwater Sportfish Record for the largest Striped Bass caught in the Ocean State. Peter caught a 75.4 pound striper off Block Island in July that measured 54.75 inches long and sported a 34 inch girth. This monumental catch broke the previous state record for Striped Bass, which was set in 1984. Peter’s record-breaking catch was witnessed by Matthew Conti of Snug Harbor Marina.

DEM Announces Main Bait & Tackle in Fall River Will Operate As a RI State Check Station at the Beginning of Deer Season

DEM's Division of Fish and Wildlife announces that Main Bait and Tackle shop in Fall River, Massachusetts has been designated as a state-operated check station during the first three days of the shotgun deer season, which opens on December 6. (More info)

DEM Announces 2008-2009 Shotgun Deer Hunting Season Dates And Regulations

DEM announces the seasons and general rules for shotgun deer hunting in Rhode Island. The shotgun season for taking either-sex and antlerless deer — female deer or male deer with antlers less than three inches long — on the mainland begins on Saturday, December 6 and continues through December 14.(More info)

DEM & Recreational Fishermen Join Forces to Evaluate New Saltwater Angler Registry Program

A Study Group has been launched to evaluate the new national Saltwater Angler Registry Program and assess its implications for Rhode Island recreational fishermen. The Group is co-chaired by DEM and the R.I. Saltwater Anglers Association (RISAA) and includes 15 representatives of recreational fishing interests and organizations from throughout the State (see attached list of members). (More info)
