For 84 years, J.M. Wilson Corporation as managing general agency has been providing specialty insurance products to independent insurance agents for risks that are not insurable in the standard marketplace. The 100-employee company services the independent agent and their client (the insured) throughout the time their policy is in force. These services include issuing the policy, processing changes to it after it is in force, providing answers to coverage questions, and helping the agent, insured and insurance company when there is a claim to be settled.

On being a small-business owner: For third-generation owner David Wilson, working as a team delivers great results. "Providing prompt quality service and products to our customers is one of the best things about being in business for yourself," he says. "We know customer satisfaction is the foundation of our success."

On technology: In 1999, the business automated its workflow and went paperless. The move came at the right time. A few years later when the tough market hit, J.M. Wilson's automation put it in a good position to service its clients and gain more.

Its quality has improved with the new systems that allows Wilson to track customer service. "Improved productivity allows our associates to provide a quicker response to our clients," says Wilson. "Through technology we can provide our clients with a defect free product."
