Protect Connecticut Small Business -- Sustain the Minimum Wage Veto!
Take Action: Sustain the Governor's Veto!

The Connecticut General Assembly adjourned in May, but not before sending Gov. Rell legislation that increased the minimum wage. This bill was harmful to the state's small businesses especially during an economic downturn.

The good news is that Gov. Rell vetoed this bill because NFIB and others in the small business community asked her to, because it is bad for the business climate in Connecticut. In her words, "At a time when employers are fighting for survival, an increase in the minimum wage will only serve to increase the cost of doing business in Connecticut and may well be the last straw for many employers."

Unfortunately, the Connecticut General Assembly is poised to override her veto unless you and other small business owners act to prevent this from happening by convincing legislators to sustain this veto. A two-thirds majority is required to override a veto. That means it will only take 101 representatives and 24 senators voting for an override to sidestep the governor's effort to protect small business.

NFIB urges you to contact your legislators today and tell them to sustain the governor's veto! Tell them how this mandatory wage increase hurts your small business! Tell them that this will be a NFIB/Connecticut key vote! If the Legislature overrides the veto, an increase in the minimum wage will only mean more costs and more headaches for our state's struggling small businesses during these tough economic times.

I am one of Connecticut's small business owners who are working hard to survive in a turbulent economy. I ask you to sustain the governor’s veto of this mandatory wage increase.
Your vote to override the governor's veto will be a NFIB/Connecticut key vote.
I am an employee for a small business in Connecticut and I oppose this mandatory wage increase as it decreases the flexibility my employer has in my compensation and benefits. We are all working hard to survive in this recessed economy and this wage increase will actually hurt me, not help me.
Raising the minimum wage is not the best way to grow our economy or raise the standard of living in Connecticut.
In an already hurting economy and being subject to high taxes, this mandatory wage increase adds insult to injury as a small business owner. We need relief and this mandatory wage increase is a burden I cannot bear and may force me to cut back the number of people I employ.
The minimum wage earners that work for me are teenagers who live with their parents. This mandatory minimum wage increase forces me to raise their compensation and at the same time prohibits me from instead raising the wage levels of my low income wage earners who are working for above minimum wage. Additionally, it may force me to cut back the number of people I employ.
Connecticut already has one of the highest minimum wages in the nation, any increase will only make our state less competitive for small businesses.
The increase in the minimum wage will be another obstacle in Connecticut that keeps me from being able to successfully grow my small business.
This is, in effect, an "income transfer" that places the entire burden of the wage increase on me as a small business owner.
This mandate is the wrong way for the Legislature to protect small businesses like mine from suffering more while the economy heads toward a recession.
The expense of raising the minimum wage for one of my workers will equal over $1,000 per year.
This mandate may stimulate off-the-book employment by small businesses in order to keep these businesses afloat.
