The new business tax, known as the margin tax, is due today, June 16. This tax was implemented with a promise to reduce your property taxes. That promise never came. Moreover, legislators did nothing to cap the growth in property taxes. They also failed to make meaningful changes to the margin tax -- changes that were endorsed, and in many cases designed, by NFIB/Texas.
We have been the lone voice in calling for change to the new margin tax you are now suffering under. We stood alone while lobby groups representing big business sold you out. You, the small business owner, the entrepreneur, the top creator of net new jobs in this state.
Now that the implications of this new tax are coming into full view, our lawmakers are coming around. Today, we are hearing from dozens of legislators and elected officials who have told us their vote for the new business tax was a mistake. They have pledged to work with us, but we can’t wait until the next legislative session in January 2009. You can do something now.
Call to action
Today, we are calling on you to do three simple things that will help reform or repeal this new business tax.
- Send a letter to your state representative and state senator and ask them to join the efforts of NFIB/Texas in the battle against the Texas Margin Tax.
- Call your state representative and state senator. If you do not know who represents you in the Texas Legislature, visit the Texas Legislature Online Web site.
- Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper and let them know what this new tax means to you and your ability to create new jobs, provide services to your community, and stay in business.
- Take a moment to fill out the NFIB/Texas Margin Tax Survey (download below) and fax it back to us at 512-478-6422. We need to know how this tax has hurt you to better represent your interests and advocate on your behalf.
