Health and safety professionals are raising awareness about the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace by observing National American Occupational Safety and Health Week, held May 4-10.
The goals in observing National American Occupational Safety and Health Week include:
- Increasing understanding of the benefits of investment in occupational health and safety;
- Raising awareness of the role and contribution of safety, health and environmental professionals; and
- Helping reduce workplace injuries and illness by encouraging new safety, health and environmental activities.
To recognize and celebrate the commitment of workers employed in the occupational safety, health and environmental fields, the American Society of Safety Engineers recently approved the creation of Occupational Safety and Health Professional Day, which will be celebrated May 7, 2008. OSHP Day also aims to raise awareness regarding the importance of the jobs performed by those who work hard to prevent occupational injury, illness and property damage.
