SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- In response to Governor Schwarzenegger's announcement today that he is opposing Proposition 98, the National Federation of Independent Business/California released the following statement:

"We are disappointed that Governor Schwarzenegger has come out in opposition to Proposition 98," said NFIB/California Executive Director John Kabateck. "The California economy depends on the jobs that small businesses create, and now, in the middle of a massive state budget deficit, is no time to make it more difficult for people to continue to create jobs. As we've said before, if you don't have a roof over your head and place to do business, none of the other issues -- healthcare or workers' comp, to name a few -- matter."

"Proposition 98 provides the only true protection for all property owners in California -- small business owners, homeowners, farmers and those in places of worship -- threatened by eminent domain, while the competing measure does nothing to protect everyone. NFIB will continue to work hard to ensure passage of Proposition 98 so all property owners are secure in knowing that government cannot take their property whenever they wish. Proposition 99 is a bait-and-switch by the abusers of eminent domain to protect the status quo, something California voters do not support."
